BNS Love Songs of All Time
Bathiya and Santhush, also known as BNS, consisting of Bathiya Jayakody and Santhush Weeraman are a Sri Lankan pop duo widely recognized as the most significant musical brand in Sri Lanka.
In the post-Covid 19, as all of
us are trying to adjust ourselves to the new normal, and with all of us just trying
to start off where we left, trying to be productive 24/7, but with stress and
anxiety clouding our mind in these uncertain times, we are desperately
searching for an outlet.
Luckily for all of us, BNS have
organized the first ever Drive-In Concert experience in Sri Lanka on the
30th of May 2020. Whilst awaiting eagerly for that, we thought it’s as good as
any time to recap with some of the most loved BNS songs, and take you down the
memory lane. By the way, these are just our personal favourites. Check
them out and do let us know your favourites as well. So here we go.
1. Mal pan Podak
If the very
meaning of love could be expressed through a song, Mal Pan Podak would be that
song. Essentially conveying that love is like a sweet drop of dew sprinkled on
a soul, gentle and soothing…. Mal Pan Podak would forever remain the song that
gets every Sri Lankan girl swooning and the promise that every Sri Lankan boy
has to live up to.
2. Adaraya Ayai
“Adaraya Ayai” is in essence
the never ending love of a father to his daughter…..
The feelings at the most
vulnerable moment of a man, the moment he gives away the hand of the daughter
he’s tucked away in his arm for so long to the safety of another, is summed up
perfectly into a song, the melody strummimg up a blend of happiness, pain and
nostalgia synchronized in harmony.
3. Kavikariye
Those
first few days of falling for a person, the subtle flirting, the playfulness
and the happiness of just seeing that special person, “Kavikariye” brings out
all the lightest feelings of love and floods us with beautiful memories of a
love as perfect as a sonetto.
4. Chandani Payala
“Chandani
Payala” with some of the most underrated song lyrics out of all the BNS songs,
speaks of the constricted emotions before a confession of love, which is
beautifully woven into its lyrics, such that if meditated upon the listener can
uncover the helplessness and the hopefulness of it all.
But we must say that every BNS live performance
of it is so soothing, such that it moves past all these conflicted emotions and
gives the listener a sense of ethereal peace that only a fulfilled love story
can give.
5. Hitha Wawannema Nae
The song
is infused with a sadness, which you don’t even need to understand the lyrics
to feel. A love so intense that even at your most depressed, your pain seems to
fall short of the unbearable agony BNS conveys into the song, Hitha Wawannema
Nae is guaranteed to break your heart into a thousand shards and make it all
over again.
6. Pathu Pem Pathum & Gum Naade
These two chirpy filmy love songs are the first of its kind
in the Sri Lankan film industry giving out the B-Town glamour of SRK-Kajol era.
In both these songs’ the female parts are sung by the Sri Lankan singing
sensation Umaria Sinhawansa, and “Pathu pem pathum” being also the stepping stone of her career, sung
by her at the young age of fourteen.
“Pathu Pem Pathum” and “Gum Naade” also have the honour of
being those songs to be made beloved at the time of their release itself. Their
popularity is such that you could even say it’s not a BNS concert, if at least one of these iconic
songs are not performed.
7. Mumunanawa
“Mumunanawa”
is a song from their latest album “Oba Nisa – White Edition” and is guaranteed
to make you want to listen to it repeatedly, telling a story of an
unconditional love. The melody of the song radiating a healing calm seems to
indicate that this emotion is devoid of anything physical but rather a love
bordering on spiritual, "Mumunanawa” is a treat to any heart that has
known Love.
8. Thurul Wenna Asai Handawe
The theme song from “Ran Samanalayo” teledrama which dwells
on the fantasies of a one sided love made all the more beautiful by accepting
the reality of it as well. The melody catchy and the lyrics sweet and loving,
this song brings a contentment to heart that few unrequited love songs can
give.
9. Unmadhini
An all-time favourite BNS song, “Unmadhini”
weaves a tale dedicated to the first unattainable crush you had, that you
wholeheartedly believed in, and to the first feelings of love you experienced
as an adolescent. The crush you shared with your friends, the mischievous
attempts to see them and the heartbreak of seeing them reciprocate another’s
love, and repeat, “Unmadhini” brings back all the best memories of being a
teenager.
10. Oya Mage Nam Jeewithe
Mal
“Oya mage nam jeewithe mal” in its
lyrics makes you visualize the style; the dance; the crowd to cheer you on, the
grand gesture you are embarking on to let that beautiful girl know the feelings
you have for her, and with the melody suggesting an unusual lightheartedness
associating a confession of love, it seems that a rejection might not
particularly affect his heart or pride, and that his only objective is letting
her know of his attraction to her and that too, without any expectation of his
own.
“Oya Mage Nam Jeewithe Mal” since then
has been the pick up line to ask out that Sri Lankan girl you like.
Hope you enjoyed the little trip down
the memory lane. So here’s wishing that when and if you get a chance to be a
part of this experience in the security of your vehicle, may the love and sheer
joy felt back when you first heard these songs, help you face this post-Covid
period with strength, gratitude and hope. And if you don’t, you can always enjoy
a BNS song/concert marathon in the security of your home.
Love,
Lazuli.
